Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Optimizing to be the direct answer — featured snippets, voice assistants, "people also ask", question-shaped content, and answer-friendly structured data

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

AEO is optimizing your content so it becomes the answer a user gets directly — in a featured snippet, a "people also ask" box, a voice-assistant reply, or an AI answer's headline response — rather than just a link they have to click and dig through.

Where SEO competes for position, AEO competes for the answer itself. The two overlap heavily, but AEO reframes the unit of optimization from "page" to "question → answer."

Where answers surface

Answer surfaces
├── Featured snippets — the boxed answer atop Google results
├── People Also Ask (PAA) — expandable related questions
├── Voice assistants — Siri, Google Assistant, Alexa read one answer
├── Knowledge panels — entity facts pulled from structured/authoritative data
└── AI answer headlines — the lead sentence of an AI Overview / chatbot reply

Core tactics

1. Structure content as question → answer

  • Use the user's actual question as a heading (<h2>How does AEO differ from SEO?</h2>).
  • Put a direct, self-contained answer in the first 1–3 sentences, then expand.
  • Match the format the question implies: a definition for "what is", numbered steps for "how to", a table for "X vs Y".

2. Write extractable formats

Answer engines lift clean structures. Favor:

  • Short answer paragraphs (~40–60 words) that stand alone.
  • Real <ol>/<ul> lists for steps and enumerations.
  • <table> for comparisons and specs.
  • Concise definitions for terms.

3. Use answer-oriented structured data

SchemaUseCaveat
FAQPageQ&A pairs on a pageGoogle restricted FAQ rich results to authoritative gov/health sites — still useful for machine understanding
HowToStep-by-step instructionsVisibility reduced in Google UI; still semantically valuable
QAPagePages where users post/answer questionsFor forum/community Q&A
SpeakableMarks passages suited to voice readoutNews-focused, limited support

Mark up only content that genuinely appears on the page.

4. Optimize for voice & conversational queries

Voice queries are longer and natural-language ("what's the best way to…", "how do I…"). Target long-tail, conversational phrasings and provide a single crisp spoken-length answer.

5. Build topical authority and E-E-A-T

Answer engines prefer trustworthy sources. Strengthen Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trust:

  • Clear authorship and credentials.
  • Accurate, current, well-cited claims.
  • Comprehensive coverage of a topic cluster (pillar + supporting pages).
  • A reputation that's corroborated across the web.

AEO content pattern

## What is Answer Engine Optimization?

Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) is the practice of structuring content so a
search or AI system can lift it as the direct answer to a user's question —
in snippets, voice replies, or AI summaries. ← self-contained 40–60 word answer

### How it works
1. Identify the exact question users ask.
2. Answer it directly in the first sentences.
3. Reinforce with structure (lists, tables) and schema.
