Employer Landscape

Major NZ tech employers, their tech stacks, team sizes, and hiring patterns

Overview

New Zealand's tech scene is concentrated in Auckland and Wellington, with a growing presence in Christchurch. The market is dominated by a mix of homegrown SaaS companies, banks undergoing digital transformation, government agencies, and a handful of global companies with NZ offices or remote-friendly policies.

Understanding who these employers are, what they build, and what they look for will give you a significant advantage in your job search.

Tips for choosing an employer

  1. Visa sponsorship is non-negotiable. Confirm the company is an Accredited Employer before you invest time in interviews.
  2. Smaller does not mean worse. A 50-person NZ startup can offer better engineering culture and growth than a 5,000-person bank.
  3. Ask about the team, not just the company. NZ companies can have wildly different cultures between teams.
  4. Location matters. Auckland has more jobs but is more expensive. Wellington is smaller but has a tight-knit tech community and is more affordable.
  5. Check Glassdoor NZ and Blind. Reviews are fewer than in the US but still useful.
